Waterfront routes look wonderfully straightforward on a map. A long blue edge, a path beside it, and very few decisions. On the ground, wind, exposed stretches and access points can change the experience.
Check whether the entire route is paved and open. Promenades sometimes end at steps, construction works or a beach section that is not suitable for everyone. Look for toilets, places to sit and easy exits back toward town.
Dress for the conditions at the water rather than the sheltered street outside your accommodation. Keep away from exposed edges, obey closures and never assume a coastal route is usable at every tide. Use the local authority's current information for routes affected by tides or waves.
An out-and-back route offers an easy way to adjust the outing, provided you account for the return into a headwind. There is no need to reach the far end. A bench with a good view may be the most satisfying destination on the whole stretch.
