Sometimes the most memorable part of a walk is the place where you stop. A gap in the trees, a broad stretch of water, a bench facing the late afternoon light.

Build that pause into the outing instead of treating it as time borrowed from the walk. Choose a safe stopping place away from traffic, path junctions and exposed edges. On a shared route, leave enough room for others to pass without stepping around you.

Bring a layer if the conditions call for it; standing still can feel different from moving. Keep an eye on the return time and changing weather, particularly when the route is exposed or unfamiliar.

There is no special task to complete while you are there. You can talk, take a photograph or simply look. A route with one good stopping place may become a favorite for that reason alone. The pause belongs to the outing just as much as the stretch of path that brought you to it.
