A route can begin beneath trees and continue along an open waterfront. Think about the whole outing when preparing for sun exposure.

Check local UV guidance and use appropriate protection, such as shade, suitable clothing, a hat and sunscreen used according to its label. Conditions and personal needs vary; seek individual advice where relevant. A cool breeze does not tell you the UV level.

Keep the items accessible enough to use. A hat buried beneath everything else is easy to leave there, and a route without shade may offer fewer comfortable stops than the map suggests.

Changing the time or route can be part of the plan. You do not need to solve every exposure problem by adding another item to a bag. Look for a combination of preparation and route choice that works for the actual conditions, and be ready to shorten or postpone if it does not.
